Throughout the historic Betsy Ross House, you’ll discover artifacts, documents and historic interpreters that reveal the extraordinary life of an ordinary 18th century woman. It was in their shop where George Washington ordered custom bed hangings for his Mount Vernon home in 1774. He recalled this a couple of years later when he needed a rebel flag discreetly sewn. This flag would soon become the symbol of a new nation independent from British tyranny. The family opened two rooms on the first floor to the public where they could see the back room where the meeting between Betsy and the Flag Committee was said to have occurred and shop for souvenirs in the front room. And to protect the House from fire and other dangers, in 1929 the Memorial Association purchased two adjacent lots which later became the courtyard you see today.
Black History Month programming at the Betsy Ross House is free to attend. The theme is A Turn of the Century, and highlights include a Victorian-style streetfair, old-fashioned carnival games and activities and a pet parade. Betsy Ross was born Betsy Griscom on New Year’s Day of 1752.
